The Powertrain expo 2017 was another great event. We just returned from Las Vegas and I thought I would do a quick round up of the event.
Running from Thursday 19th to Sunday 22nd October at the Paris hotel, it was 4 days of technical and management seminars with a trade show on the Friday and Saturday.
As always we were exhausted but excited by the time we got home on Sunday afternoon.
2017 was an important year for our CEO Scott Johnson as it marked his 30th year of attending the show, as a shop owner and software provider. Scott told me the story of how he drove all night from Reno to be at the show all those years ago.
He did spend some time comparing notes with other attendees on who had been coming for the most number of years and we came to the conclusion that a fair amount of people have been attending the Powertrain Expo for many, many years.
Profitboost sponsored the Management Seminars this year, this was a great opportunity for us to introduce our software to Transmission shop owners who are looking for repair order writing software to help run their business more efficiently and profitably.
The talks covered a wide spectrum, from selling your services right through to how to prepare to sell your business. Below you can see a quick note on the talks and links to more info where available
Selling Boldly by Alex Goldfayn
This was an all-day live workshop where Alex worked with people to improve their selling abilities. Alex is a great presenter, who works to show selling is an all-day every day opportunity. – http://goldfayn.com/
From Mindset to Mission
This talk was given by ATRA’s very own Dennis Madden and Rodger Bland. As always they did a great job and displayed their well-known humor and team work. http://www.atra.com/
Building Decision Makers
Maylan newton is a well-known industry consultant, who spends countless hours every month in Transmission shops helping them improve their efficiency and profitability.
His talks are always entertaining, and this was no different.
Making a decision can be one of the toughest things to do in any situation and people do not become decision makers overnight, you have to build them. Maylans talk was all about how you can work with your staff to build their decision-making skills. http://www.esiseminars.com/
Gain Control of Your Business by Letting Go
Maryann Croce is a long term Profitboost user and she give a stellar talk about “letting go” and how it has helped her and her husband Tony in their business, in their marriage and in life in general.
Being a woman in what is traditionally a man’s world is never easy but Maryanne has forged her own path and built (with Tony) a very successful transmission shop, that is very well known locally and they have expanded that into at least 2 other businesses she mentioned. http://crocestrans.com/
7 Traits of a Successful Leader
Nancy Friedman is known as the Phone Doctor but she has a lot more information to share than just how to be effective on the phone. Every Transmission shop owner wants to be a good leader, you all want to keep your staff happy and give your customers the best experience, so you need to know how to lead and inspire. Nancy discussed the 7 traits that you should have or work towards and lots more.
Smart Exit Workshop
John Anderson spent 3 hours on Sunday morning giving a full workshop where he worked with people to work out an exit strategy. As much as we all like to think we are immortal there comes a time in every auto shop owners life when he has to think about retirement.
We speak to a lot of transmission and general repair shop owners who really have no idea what their business is worth and how they would go about selling it. John works with people so they can start planning for retirement and maximize their exit strategy. http://smart-exit.com/
Powertrain Trade Show 2017
With around 100 companies displaying their Transmission parts, technology, software and tools it really is the show that every shop owner should go to. The parts suppliers, big and small, were there.
Seeing an Elvis impersonator as you walked through the door was a bit of a surprise but a fun one. He seemed taller than the real Elvis and not quite as round, although with the Las Vegas buffets he could easily get there.
As with every trade show there are lots of giveaways and freebies to be had, pens, baseball caps, bags and more were everywhere.
One of the booths was giving out bottles of coke, diet coke and cake. That seemed to be a hit as I saw people walking round with bottles of it all day long.
Being as we are a bit more health conscious Profitboost gave out water bottles (Anyone who knows Paul will know that the health-conscious bit is an opportunity to laugh)
Powertrain Expo is not just about freebies, it is about meeting other owners, suppliers and
We can only speak for ourselves, but the 2017 show seemed to have more people who were willing to take the time to look in depth at our software, ask questions and work through the answers.
We signed up many new shops for a special 90 day demo – Use the code ATRA on our sign up page and you too can get a 90 day trial instead of 30 days – and are working closely with them to make sure they get the best auto shop software for their business.
Relationships were formed and reformed throughout the show, for myself it was nice to see many of our current clients and to meet many potential new ones.
